Labour policy on cold homes – have your say

Burning cash outside Westminster

With heat leaking from our homes, we’ve virtually burning cash to stay warm – Contact your MP to fight for change

Labour are currently working on their policy to help people who can’t afford to keep their homes warm in winter. They have made a splash with a promise of a price freeze, which may help hold further price rises at bay.

But the problem of high bills and freezing homes in winter will only be permanently solved when our homes are properly insulated and efficient. The fact is a unit of gas or electricity is already cheaper in the UK than in almost all our EU neighbours. However, we have higher bills as we use more fuel to keep warm, our homes leak far too much heat.

So while eye-catching price freezes may capture headlines, only a massive home improvement programme will solve the problem long term. And Labour are now deciding just how much of a priority to make this should they win the next election. If they are prepared to make better housing a key priority, millions of homes could benefit. If they offer an unambitious scheme, people could be choosing between heating and eating for decades to come. For millions of households, this is a vital decision.
